Antique Hand-Knotted Heriz Serapi Area Rug

Item Details

An antique Heriz Serapi area rug. This Persian wool area rug is hand-knotted in an abrashed palette of rose, azure, deep midnight blue, and cornsilk. It begins with a rectilinear six-lobed central medallion grounded in midnight blue, enclosing a smaller, diamond medallion, which is grounded in cornsilk. The center medallion rests on a rose colored field, which is cornered with deep spandrels in azure, cornsilk, and rose. Each phase of the field, from the center medallion to the spandrels, is densely populated with stylized palmettes, flowers, oak leaves, boteh, and vines. Additionally, the rug features two unusual, laddered motifs in cornsilk at the top and bottom of the field. Framing the field are three borders, including a primary turtle border over midnight blue. The primary border is flanked on one side by a meandering carnation minor border over azure and on the other by meandering trefoil flowers over cornsilk. Selvedges are overcast, though fraying of cords has created incidental weft fringe in some areas. At top and bottom, the rug finishes with short undyed wool warp fringe, which is unbound. Unlabeled.
