A hand colored map of the solar system on paper titled Systema Mundi Tychonicum, by German mathematician and cartographer Johann Doppelmayr (1677-1750). Dating to the first half of the 18th century, this original engraved model of the solar system, based on the theories of Tycho Brahe and Giovanni Battista Riccioli, features a main diagram demonstrating the theory that the sun revolves around the earth, surrounded by smaller diagrams showing alternate theories for the movement of celestial bodies. The map is illuminated with scenes from Greek and Roman mythology, constellations of the zodiac, and additional text. It is presented unsigned under layered mats and glass, in a wood frame with hanging wire to the verso.
