Antique Handwoven Rug/Wall Hanging
Item Details
An antique handwoven wool area rug/wall hanging, likely South American or North African. This piece is woven in a palette of berry, black, taupe, and orange. It features an intricate geometric design alternating between horizontal and vertical orientation. At the top and bottom are horizontal panels containing abstract motifs or monochromatic stripes. These bookend the field, which contains five major vertical panels, each featuring an infinity pattern consisting of latticed diamond shapes of different sizes. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short, unbound red wool warp fringe. The rug comes with a hanging rod. It is unlabeled.
Condition
- there are at least three areas of repair including patches from what appear to have been different weavings; the rug could benefit from professional cleaning.
