A 1928 vintage French language softcover edition of the classic French novel Paul et Virginie (‘Paul and Virginia’) by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published 1788. The story is set on the Île de France, a.k.a. Mauritius, an island colony of France in the Indian Ocean, with the eponymous Paul and Virginie being French expatriates who grow up in the tropical paradise of the island and fall in love, until Virginie has to return to France. The author uses the setting to contrast the mores of 18th century french society with the more natural, simple lifestyle of the islanders. This edition is illustrated with beautiful hand-colored wood engravings by Paul Charavel, and is published 1928 by Editions Nilsson of Paris. it is bound in an illustrated softcover with a transparent plastic outer sleeve.
Condition
- some of the pages are attached to their opposite page because the top edge of the paper is uncut. Otherwise, light wear consistent with age.
