An antique handwoven Yomut area soumak. This wool rug is woven in an abrashed palette of mocha, mauve, pumpkin, navy, and ivory. It features a diamond lattice pattern of curled diamond-shaped guls, which are nested, with varied patterns at the centers, in navy, mauve, and pumpkin over mocha. Dividing the guls are interstitial borders of navy and ivory over mocha. The field is framed by four borders, including a major border that reprises the pattern of the field at a smaller scale and with the inclusion of ivory highlights. Minor borders feature key patterns in ivory over mocha. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end with brown kilim skirts and undyed brown warp fringe in wool and goat hair, which is unbound in some places and knotted in others. - there are several holes and one large area of loss to fringe extending well into the major border; overall, the rug maintains integrity; there is some residue at one end; the rug could benefit from professional cleaning.
