An early-20th century Danish engraving on paper by artist I. Ballin, created after a 1905 oil painting on canvas by listed Danish artist Anton Dorph (1831 – 1914). The piece, titled A Young Fisherwoman Waiting for Her Husband’s Return From the Sea, depicts a woman sitting alone at her dining table with her husband’s coat draped over an empty chair. She gazes out to the ocean from an open window, as a baby sleeps in a rocking cradle nearby. The work includes in-plate notations of ‘Malet af A. Dorph’ to the lower left and ‘Stukket af I. Ballin’ to the lower right. It is set under a taupe French mat and presented under glass in a decorative wooden frame with gilt gesso embellishments to the front and hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- to Fair; print is slightly buckled inside frame; foxing to paper and mat; toning to print, especially at margins and lower corners; acid burns and discoloration to mat, especially visible near top portion; sticker residue to frame glass at upper right; scratching, chipping, staining and surface abrasions to frame finish; wear to frame verso; backing paper is mostly torn away.
