A Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print on paper titled Shiba Shinmei Shrine and Zōjōji Temple (芝神明増上寺), No. 79 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (江戸百景余興) by famed Edo period Japanese woodblock artist Utagawa Hiroshige (歌川 広重, 1797-1858), originally published in the 7th month of 1858. This is print is a later 19th-century copy. A group of tourists flocks from the Zōjōji Temple in the upper left, the burial site of the Tokugawa shoguns. A group of monks beg in the streets with their tightly ordered ranks and matching attire. the group heads towards Shiba Shinmei Shrine which sits to the right of the scene. To the upper right are two cartouches with text in each identifying the publisher as ‘Shitaya Uo Ei.’ To the lower left is Hiroshige’s signature in a red cartouche. Presented with a grey matting, under glass, housed in a bamboo form gilt wood frame.
