Utagawa Kunisada Woodblock on Paper Figures at the Beach
Item Details
A Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print on laid paper by one of the most prolific Edo period Japanese artist Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), published in the early 19th-century, circa 1825. Untitled, the print features three finely dressed women watch as their children play near Meoto Iwa (夫婦岩), commonly known in English as the ‘Married Couple Rock’. The group of rocks are wedded by a shimenawa and are located in the sea near Futami, Mie Prefecture. The artist’s ‘Gototei Kunisada ga’ (五渡亭国貞画) signature is printed in the lower right corner. A kiwame censor seal alongside a Nishimura-ya Yohachi publisher seal are present in the lower center of the print. Presented with two pale green mats, under glass, and housed in a gilt wood frame.

- some pale foxing; fading to the colors; minor scratches and marks to the frame.
