John Ellsworth Weis Original Oil Still Life on Canvas
Item Details
An early 20th-century original oil painting on canvas by well-listed Cincinnati-based artist John Ellsworth Weis (1892-1962). Painted with great skill in rendering, mark-making and color-mixing, this still life arrangement depicts a folded newspaper, a pair of drumsticks, a small tom-tom drum and a blue ceramic vase full of assorted, colorful blossoms. These objects rest on a muted slate gray surface before a darkened backdrop, simply occupying space. This painting is mounted in a beveled wood frame with a distressed gold-tone finish, equipped to hang.
Weis was born in Indiana and moved to Norwood, Ohio when he was a child. Due to family struggles, he found it necessary to work several day jobs in order to attend classes at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the evenings. He studied under the likes of Frank Duveneck and Lewis Henry Meakin. Faculty members at the Academy were so impressed with both John’s talent and his work ethic, that at the age of 22 he was offered a full-time position working there. He taught there for the next 38 years, mentoring many up-and-coming young artists in Cincinnati.
