A superb circa 1890 French Limoges foil enamel on copper portrait of a mythological Valkyrie against a red background by Theophile Soyer (1853 – 1940). The circular plaque painting displays in intricate detailing the profile of a woman wearing a gold helmet with wings, a mask and blue foil scales. Her gown has an emerald at the sleeve, embroidery and a ruffle at the bust while an almost transparent gold ribbon unfurls at her neck. The portrait is initialed TS in the lower right and is presented in a gold wood frame retaining a “Closson” sticker at the back.
