An early hand thrown 18th century Whieldon Staffordshire mustard pot. The vessel has a fitted cover with a tall, thrown finial handle. The narrow mouth tapers to a defined shoulder and straight sides. It has an applied, pulled handle and a glossy, brown tortoiseshell glaze, showing crazing. Three paper labels to the bottom read, ’ L.A.C.M.A. Wedgwood from California Collection’, ‘Edward-Dean Master-Pieces 96-7’, and 1971 Exhibition at de Young Museum San Francisco No. 17’. The labels obscure the mark.
