South Asian Wooden Chest

A South Asian wooden chest box. This latching box is painted to depict Hindu and South Asian figures. The top depicts a man on horseback, elephant in tow, approaching a holy man at an outdoor temple as the sun watches overhead. The front panel shows a couple in formalwear offering each other bowls of food as a third figure looks on, and the side panels each show identical scenes of the Hindu goddess Devi riding a tiger and flanked by two attendants. The box also features rope handles to each side and a metal closing clasp to the front.
Condition
- cracking to the paint; the mount on the back is chipped and cracked; corners have wear, and one is cracked at the base.
