Hand-Knotted Persian Mashhad Area Rug
Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Mashhad area rug. This curvilinear wool rug is rendered in a palette of pale rose, coral, deep midnight blue, cerulean, and ivory. It begins with a very large pendant medallion, which encloses two smaller medallions, each with pendants, in phases grounded in camel, rose, ivory, and midnight blue. The medallions rest on a rose-grounded lozenge, which, in turn, rests on a midnight-blue field. The field is visible only in the corner areas, each of which features a large pomegranate pod. Each phase of the field, from the center to the corners, is densely populated with palmettes, flowers, foliage, and vines. Framing the field are seven, mostly floral, borders, including a wide primary border grounded in midnight blue. The outer guard border is pale rose. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
