17th/18th-Century Italian Polychrome Carved Wood Virgin and Child

Item Details

A late 17th/early 18th-century Italian polychrome carved wood Virgin and Child sculpture. Gessoed wood carving with polychrome decoration of Christ enthroned in Mary’s lap. Remnants of original gilding with strong color still intact. Christ is depicted with the Sacred Heart in his left hand, representing his love for humanity, and the apple from the Garden of Eden in his right hand representing original sin. To the verso is a wax seal that appears to read, ‘Sigillum Cuidense?’ The seal and faint smell of incense possibly indicates a churchly origin. Believed to be from the Italian region of Lombardy.

EBTH certifies this item is from the private collection of personal property formerly owned by Dr. Robert H. Schuller.
