Hand-Knotted Northwest Persian Area Rug
Item Details
A Northwest Persian area rug. This rectilinear wool rug, possibly from Hamadan, is hand-knotted in a palette of madder red, cream, and teal. It begins with a central star medallion in cream over an abrashed red field. The medallion features stylized depictions of palmettes, in teal, rose, pink, and green, as well as arrow pendants in four directions. The field features a stylized herati pattern with kaleidoscopically arranged palmettes, oak leaves, flowers, and vines, cornered by shallow spandrels in cream, the spandrels each including a tiny depiction of a four-legged animal. Framing the field are narrow compound borders including a sawtooth pattern, stripes in red, cream, and black, and a running water guard border. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
