A Persian Karaja accent rug. This wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of rose, madder red, cream. black, and slate blue. It begins with three vertically arranged Karaja medallions over a red field. The top and bottom medallions are octograms with a cruciform central axis. The central medallion contains a complex arrangement of pinwheels and florets framed in a high-contrast cream-colored outer phase with hooks and ram’s horns on the lateral ends. The field of the rug is populated with a constellation of semi-curvilinear motifs including split oak leaves, possible bird or camel figures, pinwheels. tulips, florets, ram’s horns, and a variety of abstract elements. Framing the field are four borders, including geometric meandering florets over black and strings of abstract shapes over cream and rose. Selvedges are overcast, with protective strips sewn onto the underside. The rug finishes at either end with short ivory cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
