Circa 1850 Antique Austrian Paint Decorated Wardrobe

Item Details

A mid-nineteenth century antique Austrian paint-decorated wardrobe. This unique and eye-catching piece was handcrafted and hand painted by craftsmen on the estate of the Mautner family in southeastern Austria, probably in the town of Trattenbach, and has remained in the family ever since. The cabinet has a scrolled crown, a central hinged door, and a lower drawer to the bottom. The cabinet’s interior is equipped with clothing hooks attached to hinged arms. The ornately designed blue and red exterior is hand painted in a traditional Austrian style highlighted by nine panels of floral bouquets in urn-shaped vases. The interior of the cabinet door bears a unique set of markings first applied to the piece by the Austro-Hungarian government to prevent treasured and culturally important items from leaving the country.
