A hardcover copy of Alone, the autobiography of American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd, signed by the author to the front flyleaf with a personal dedication. Byrd was a US Navy officer and Medal of Honor recipient, who was the first to reach the South Pole by air in 1929. Alone is about his second Antarctic expedition in 1934, during which Byrd spent five months alone manning a weather station, and almost died of carbon monoxide poisoning from his stove. This edition was published 1938 by G.P. Putnam’s Sons of New York, bound in a blue cloth hardcover, and retains it original dust jacket.
