After Charles Russell Bronze Cowboy Sculpture

Item Details

A bronze sculpture after Charles Russell (American, 1864 – 1926) . The sculpture depicts a cowboy with lasso herding two long-horned cattle. The figural group is mounted atop a naturalistic ovoid base with green marble plinth. Signed to the back edge.
Charles Russell was one of the best known of the Western artists, working in the mediums of bronze sculpture and genre painting. Russell spent his youth as a cowboy in Montana, observing and painting. In 1887 he spent a winter in Canada among the Blood Indians, an experience that heightened his artistic and emotional respect for their soon-to-be-lost way of life. Russell worked prolifically as an illustrator, working on a project in Yellowstone Park which heightened awareness to the protection of the native species that make the Park their home. Russell’s works are collected and exhibited extensively both in the United States and abroad.
