A bronze sculpture titled Off the Range (Coming Through the Rye) after Frederic Remington (American, 1861–1909). The sculpture depicts four exuberant horsemen at full gallop with pistols raised, coming off the range to celebrate a long day of work. The horsemen are mounted atop a naturalistic ovoid base. Signed to the back edge.
Frederic Remington was known as the premier illustrator, painter and sculptor of the West. His works are dramatic and action-filled, with depictions of cowboys, Native Americans, horse and cattle and other Western genre. He created 25 bronzes and over 3000 paintings over his lifetime. Born in New York state, Remington spent a year at Yale School of Fine Arts, dropping out to travel out West and sketch. Remington worked as an illustrator for a variety of magazines of the times, such as Harper’s Weekly, Outing Magazine and Century Magazine. During the Spanish-American War, Remington worked as an artist on the battle field. Remington utilized the Roman Bronze Works to create his bronze sculptures, creating them with the lost-wax method.
