An original 1994 oil and acrylic painting on canvas by reputed Cincinnati-based artist Gayle Gillette Hummel, titled East of the Sun and West of the Moon. The painting depicts a woman standing in the foreground, facing the sea as a fiery orange sun hovers at the horizon. The sky is streaked with purple, pink, turquoise, jade green and lavender, and reflects on the sea below. The buttery, glossy paint has been applied with heavy impasto directly to the canvas with a palette knife, adding a sculptural, tactile element to the piece. Artist signature is signed in magenta paint to the lower left.The painting is mounted in a simple beveled wood frame with a bright gold leaf finish, equipped to hang. The verso of the canvas is marked with title, date and a personal inscription.
Gayle Hummel is a native of Terrace Park in Cincinnati, Ohio who studied fine art at both Miami University and The University of Cincinnati. Her work can be found in many galleries and private collections worldwide. Her work was also chosen by the late Princess Diana to be hung in a Children’s hospital in England.
