Jean Messagier Limited Edition Lithograph "Cezanne Among the Marsupials"

Item Details

A limited edition lithograph on paper titled Cezanne Among the Marsupials by well listed French artist Jean Messagier (1920-1999), dated 1983. This work features a loose, sketchy portrayal of a man with a white face, wearing a black suit, and centrally situated within a web of foliage and marsupials peeking through the brush. The work is rendered with vibrant colors such as red, yellow, green, and magenta; lines are squiggled and colors are sprayed throughout the composition in quick gestural movements. The lower French caption of the composition roughly translates to the English title of the work. To the lower left, the work is numbered 197 out of an edition of 200. It is signed by hand to the lower right. A framer’s label and a descriptive label from D.H. Marketing & Consulting, Inc. are adhered to the verso. The print is presented behind glass in a wood frame with a faux marble finish and a magenta mat.

Messagier studied at l’Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and he is often associated with Lyrical Abstraction and Tachism. His work has been exhibited at multiple institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Venice Biennale, the Musée des beaux-arts, among many others.
