A semi-antique Kerman Afshar area rug. This Persian tribal wool rug, is hand-knotted in a lively, abrashed palette of cornsilk, shades of bright pink, vermillion, and periwinkle. It features a tulip lattice pattern over a cornsilk field, the latticework consisting of a meander pattern. Enclosed in each complete diamond are four in-facing tulips and two or four depictions of songbirds in a variety of colors and patterns. Also included are oak leaves, tree forms, and other symbolic motifs that may have been personal to the weaver. The field is framed by compound borders grounded in black, pink/vermillion, and periwinkle; these feature running water, meandering floral, and repeating floral patterns. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at one end with a short kilim skirt in brown and ivory, with no fringe, and at the other end with short wool warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
