Chante Clair Majolica Rooster Pitcher

Item Details

An figural majolica rooster pitcher. The hand-painted pitcher features dark shades of green, raspberry, and gold with bright yellow accents, and features a rooster’s head with its beak as the spout. The pitcher is decorated with scrolls on each side, surrounded by laurels leaves. One scroll reads, ‘CHANTE CLAIR POUR LA FRANCE’ (Sing clear for France) and the other, ’ LE GAULOIS’ (The Gallic rooster). Orginially pitchers such as these were used by children to collect money for disabled war veterans after the 1870 war between France and Germany. The rooster is the symbol of France, demonstrating the vengeful spirit and the patriotism of this period.
