Keith Silversmith Navajo Sand Painting "Creation Storyes"

Item Details

A sand painting titled Creation Storyes by Navajo artist Keith Silversmith. This painting was made by pouring tinted sand and powder atop an adhesive surface creating a textured image, and depicts Yei deities, the Coyote, and other motifs related to the Navajo creation story, also known as the ‘Diné Bahaneʼ’, which translates to ‘Story of the People’. It is signed and titled by hand to the verso, and presented without glass in a wooden frame. To the verso is additional information and a wire for hanging and additional information about the artist. Navajo sand paintings are traditionally used in healing and harvest ceremonies, which call upon help from the Supernaturals, and are called ‘places where the gods come and go’ in the Diné (Navajo) language.
