A lithograph on paper with hand-painted watercolor embellishments titled Washington Square Park, New York City by American artist Betty Guy (1920-2016). This work features an illustration of Washington Square Park, with the triumphal arch dominating the scene. The black delineations are printed by lithography, and the scene is embellished with hand-painted watercolor accents throughout. The artist’s in-plate signature is present to the lower right. It is presented under glass, with off-white matter and brown and gold-tone wood frame.
Betty Guy was primarily known for her landscapes in watercolor often illustrating city landmarks. She received her art training at the Art’s Student League in New York, the Alliance Française, and L’Académie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France. Some notable recipients of Guy’s work include Queen Elizabeth II, Gianni Versace, and the family of John Steinbeck, among others.
