The set of eight antique Hepplewhite mahogany dining chairs, constructed by Schmieg & Kotzian. Chairs feature a shield-back design, with a rounded lower edge, a four ribbed splat with bell flower carving, tapered legs and spade feet. The seats are finished with the original blue mohair upholstery in a lattice and floral design. This set includes six side chairs and two armchairs. The chairs include a number and are stamped with a circular SK mark symbolizing the two families. The Schmieg & Kotzian are English designers and cabinetmakers in London from 1899 to 1907, who then moved to New York. Chairs were purchased by this family from New York. Karl Schmieg and Heinrich Kotzian are German cabinet makers, with traditional European cabinet making training.
