Antique Hand-Woven Persian Tribal Area Rug

Item Details

An antique Persian tribal rug in wool. This small area rug, possibly made by Luri weavers in southwestern Iran, is hand-knotted in an abrashed palette of cranberry, indigo, ivory, and brown. It begins with a red lozenge featuring ram’s horn pendants and hooks at the top and bottom, the lozenge resting on a field of indigo. The field and lozenge each feature mina khani floral patterns at slightly different scales. Framing the field are compound borders including a major border featuring a rectilinear meandering floral pattern over cranberry. Minor borders feature a floral meander over azure, repeating florets over ivory, and checkered divider strips. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with unbound warp fringe made of wool with goat hair. Unlabeled.
