A hand-knotted Persian Afshar area rug. This crisply rendered wool rug features a rectilinear vase design in a palette of cranberry, azure, black, and toffee. It begins with a multi-partite central medallion over a notched cranberry-colored lozenge, which is populated with numerous variations of tree of life forms, flowers, palmettes, and bouquets in vases. Peeking out along the sides and corners of the lozenge, the notches of which contain vase forms with flowering plants, is an azure field. Compound, broken borders, including a primary border featuring a complex, geometric crab pattern, frame the field. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with thick ivory cotton warp fringe. Unlabeled.
