J. Harris Etching with Aquatint "The Meet"

Item Details

A colored aquatint etching is after John Frederick Herring Sr.’s (1795-1865) original painting (1852). It was engraved by J. Harris, and published by Fores’s sporting and fine art print repository in London. The image depicts the riders gathered before the start of the hunt and includes a poem by the English poet William Somerville (1675-1742) which reads: “Delightful Scene! Where all around is gay, Men, Horses, Dogs, And in each smiling Countenance appears, Fresh blooming Health and universal Joy. Then to the Copse, Thick with entangling grass or prickly furze, With silence lead thy many coloured Hounds, In all their Beauty’s Pride.” The poem is split in half on the left and right of the lower margin, framing the title. This print is presented in a gold tone frame with a white mat, under glass.
