Peter Keil Original 1985 Expressionist Oil on Board "John Lennon"
Item Details
An original 1985 oil painting on masonite board by very well-listed and prolific contemporary German Expressionist, Peter Robert Keil (Berlin; born 1942), titled John Lennon. The image depicts a flamboyantly colored portrait of a man’s face turned at three-quarters of an angle with voluptuous smiling red lips, his glassy blue eyes holding a distant gaze as a nebulous orange void surrounds him, executed in Keil’s signature vibrant jewel-toned glazes and thick black outlines. The painting is signed and dated by the artist in paint to the lower right; title and signature are also marked to the verso.
Mentored initially by artist Otto Nagel in the Expressionist form, and as a metalworker artist at the University of Arts in Berlin, Keil’s style would undergo a series of noticeable transformations due to personal experiences and his developing passion for travel. This metamorphosis was first observed during the 1960s, and within a decade his spontaneous and exuberant signature style was established. Keil chooses flowers, portraits, cityscapes and landscapes as his preferred subjects. Alongside the occasional sculpture in steel and wood, he is also an experienced ceramicist.
