Enameled Ginger Jars with Auspicious Chinese Symbols

Item Details

A pair of enameled ginger jars with auspicious Chinese symbols. The jars feature a squat convex lid with an acorn-shaped handle and an oblate body that tapers towards the foot. Incised Buddha rose and lotus flower patterns in shades of red, orange, blue, and purple adorn the body and lid. Additional symbols include yellow, pink, and blue lingzhi mushroom trim around the mouth, stylized multicolored bats, and red immortality knots around the jar. Unmarked to the underside. The flowers are emblems of purity, mushrooms signify the wish for long life, and the bats (蝠 fu) are homonyms for good fortune (福 fu).
