An 18th-century mezzotint on paper by listed British artist Thomas Burford (1710 – 1774). The print depicts a hunting scene after an oil painting on canvas by James Seymour (1702 – 1752) titled The Chase, or alternately A Huntsman Jumping a Gate or A Racehorse Held by a Groom. The piece is noted to the lower margins with in-plate text of ‘T. Burford, fecit’, ‘Seymour, inv.’ and ‘Published according to Act of Parliament, September 16th, 1754’. The print is presented under glass in a black wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- small hole to center of print; foxing and significant fading to print, especially to edges; heavy surface wear and scratching to frame; loose joints to frame; small holes to frame’s backing paper.
