A hand-knotted Turkish Oushak area rug. This rectilinear wool rug is rendered in a variegated palette of madder red, sapphire, and cream. It begins with a central stepped hexagonal medallion seeded with a pair of octagonal guls and other symbolic motifs. The medallion rests on a red field populated with a variety of symmetrically arranged symbols and motifs including trees of life, eight-pointed stars of different sizes, and cross shapes. Framing the field are compound, resolved borders, including a primary border featuring a complex geometric pattern over sapphire, a medahil inner guard border, and a flower and gul outer guard border over cream. Selvedges are double overcast, the rug finishing at either end with gray wool warp fringe. The rug is unlabeled.
