1810 Map of Spain and Portugal
Item Details
An 1810 antique British map of the Iberian peninsula, titled ‘Spain and Portugal from the best Authorities’. It was engraved by Barlow and published by Brightly and Kennersly of Suffolk, England. The scale is given in both British and Spanish miles. Note that at the time of publication, British troops were fighting alongside Portuguese and Spanish armies in Iberia against the French-backed regime of Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother Joseph, in what is known as the Peninsular War (1807-1814). While this map does not depict military fronts or troop movements, the context of the war may have made the geography of the peninsula more interesting to the British public of the day.
Condition
- minor discoloration and wear to edges, but overall quite good considering age.
