Raphael Soyer Oil on Canvas “After Brugel”

An oil painting on canvas titled After Brugel by listed American artist Raphael Soyer (1899–1987). The work depicts a portrait of a woman after Dutch Renaissance painter Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525–1569) who is known for his genre paints of peasants. The work is titled and signed to the top of the work in paint. Presented in large stained wooden frame without glass.

Born in Russia, Raphael Soyer emigrated to the United States with his family in 1912. He is recognized as a Social Realist artist, known for his paintings of contemporary men and women in everyday settings. He received art training at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League of New York where he became associated with other renowned artists of his time. His work has been collected and exhibited by numerous art institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art where a retrospective of his work was held in 1967.

- some wear around edges of frame; paint mark to the bottom frame; small puncture marks to the bottom of the canvas; some wear to the exposed canvas to the verso.
