A watercolor painting on paper titled Commission Florida by well-listed artist Ida Proper (1873 – 1957), dated 1950. The work depicts a white-washed porch surrounded by a lush and verdant garden. Signed by the artist to the lower left corner. To the upper left corner is the blind stamp for the paper manufacturer. To the verso is a graphite inscription giving the artist’s full name, the title, and year. Under a triple layer of gold-tone, silver-tone, and linen mat, presented under glass and housed in a white wood frame.

Ida Proper was a watercolor painter well-known for her landscapes and genre scenes. She was born in Bonaparte, Iowa and later attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas. In her studies at the Art Student’s League in New York, she studied under William Merritt Chase, John Twachtmann, and Frank DuMond. In her lifetime, she exhibited throughout Europe and in New York, where she kept a studio. Today, her work can be found in numerous private collections.
