Louis XV Style Paint-Decorated Commode With Marble Top

Item Details

A Louis XV style paint-decorated commode with a marble top. The mixed wood, bombé-form case is painted with Continental style genre scenes in a crackled finish. It features a rectangular, rouge marble top with molded, serpentine edges above a stack of two machine-dovetailed, oak-lined drawers. The fronts are fitted with brass tone, scrolled foliate handles and escutcheons and the commode rises on cabriole, front legs with scrolled, brass tone mounts. The case is further embellished with a bowed apron and the painted back bears an illegible stamp in the upper left corner. The commode comes with a piece of paper marked ‘Glanz French Furniture / 50, Allée de la Robertsau / 67000 Strasbourg (France)’, possibly referring to the retailer from which it was purchased.
