Fine Hand Thrown Double Walled Japanese Tea Set
Item Details
A very fine hand thrown double walled buff stoneware Japanese tea set. The set includes a double walled tea pot, having a pierced, fitted lid with ball finial and applied bent bamboo handle. Like the matching cups and creamer and sugar set, it has carved heart forms in the outer wall, with an overall intentionally crackled celadon green upper and tenmoku-style lower section. The cream pitcher and covered sugar bowl match the tea pot, with gold luster decoration on the hearts and as embellishment to the surfaces. Included are ten handleless double walled tea bowls in the same pattern and glaze. Double-walled vessels are difficult to make and these are a fine example of the technique. Impress marked ‘Japan’ to the underside. Gold luster firing requires additional an additional low-firing after glazing; this set was time-intensive to produce.
