J. T. Gouache and Acrylic Russian Folk Art Paintings on Gourds

A pair of gourds painted with acrylic and gouache in a folk art style by J. T., per the seller purchased some 45 years ago at a Russian Orthodox Monastery in Crete. The first of these paintings depicts a bearded man holding prayer beads and a small mug with a beverage on a gourd with a red background. The second painting depicts a bearded man holding a musical instrument on a blue background. Both figures wear patterned clothing with gold tone paint, and the gourds are finished with a high-gloss varnish. The red gourd is signed ‘JT No. 58’ to the underside, and the blue gourd is signed ‘JT. No. 59/B’ to the underside.
Condition
- surface scuffs on red gourd; varnish wearing in some places on each gourd; seeds are still present—gourds rattle when shaken.
