Circa 1906 "Reaching Panther" Bronze by Anna Hyatt Huntington

Item Details

A circa 1906 (cast in 1926) bronze titled Reaching Jaguar by noted sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington (American, 1876-1973). The bronze depicts the stealthy, muscular animal as it is ready to pounce from it’s rocky mount. Huntington’s bronze is based on her studies of Senor Lopez, a feline from Paraguay and the first to occupy the lion house at the Bronx Zoo in New York. The bronze is signed in the cast at the base with the Gorham Foundry’s stamp as well.
Anna Hyatt Huntington was a prominent twentieth century animal sculptor, renowned for her acute powers of observation. Born in Cambridge, Mass., she was the daughter of a Harvard zoology and paleontology professor and had a keen interest in animals and their anatomy. After moving to New York City in 1902 she enrolled in the Art Students League and quickly found a market for her statuettes. Two of Huntington’s limestone crouching jaguar sculptures flank the Fordham Road entrance to New York’s Bronx Zoo.
