An oil painting on canvas of two nude figures by Massachusetts-based artist Calvin Waller Burnett (1921-2007). Portrayed with bleeding, diluted earth tones and incised white delineations, this work features two seated nude figures embracing and a perched bird next to them. The painting is signed in sgraffito to the lower left. Handwriting to the verso reads ‘D&L Smith-Watson-12-21-78, W. Kahn 201 Silver’. A label from Artistic Interiors, Inc. is also present to the verso. It is presented in a silver-tone metallic frame.
Born in Massachusetts, Burnett attended the Massachusetts College of Art and received his MFA from Boston University. He is known for his abstract modern illustrations and prints that exhibit a loose painterly and sketchy style. His work has been collected by several institutions including the Smithsonian Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of African-American History, among others.
