An oil painting on canvas Expressionist style portrait by listed artist Jennings Tofel (1891 – 1959). The painting depicts a pair of figures embracing in the foreground utilizing with visible brushstrokes and impasto implying movement and emotion. Tofel is known for utilizing allegory and symbolism in his work. The painting is signed by the artist to the lower left. It is presented in a gold tone frame with a linen liner and a hanging wire to the verso.
Condition
- some wear to the frame; there is a rip in the canvas, towards the lower right corner (in the middle of the rightmost figure’s chest); some wear and discoloration to the verso.
