Hand-Knotted Persian Tabriz Hunting Rug

Item Details

A hand-knotted Persian Tabriz hunting rug. This curvilinear wool area rug is finely rendered in a palette of midnight blue, red, taupe, and cream. It features a densely patterned, ornate design beginning with a central medallion with cruciform and palmette pendants at top and bottom. Grounded in red, the medallion contains shah abbasi palmettes and flowers as well as four birds and four serpentine reptiles at the center, the creatures of the medallion repeating in the spandrels. The medallion rests on a midnight blue field, which is populated with men on galloping horses, running deer, men aiming with bow and arrow, and birds, amid twirling vines, flowers, and lancet leaves. Framing the field are eight borders, including meandering floral and medahil minor borders. The major border features men with bows and arrows and leaping fallow deer amid a pattern of palmettes and stylized flowering trees over a red ground. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with short kilim skirts and knotted ivory wool warp fringe. Unlabeled.
