Handwoven Anatolian Tribal Area Rug
Item Details
A handwoven Anatolian tribal area rug. This wool rug is woven in a palette of burnt sienna, black, camel, and burgundy. It begins with a hexagonal central medallion, which encloses a teapot shape over a black, camel, and burgundy ground. The medallion rests on a burnt-sienna field, which contains numerous floating motifs, including teapots amid ashik Ersari guls, and a wide variety of other guls and symbolic elements. Framing the field are five geometric borders, including checkered variations in the colors of the field, crenelated borders, and a complex primary border beginning with bands of color turning at right angles, which shift their orientation as they move around the field. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at one end with tightly woven camel-colored kilim skirts, which have hand-finished edges; the opposite end features braided yellow wool warp fringe at the end of the kilim skirt. The rug is unlabeled.
