Luigi Bechi Oil Painting on Panel of Two Children Reading a Book

Item Details

An oil painting on panel of two children by well-listed Italian painter Luigi Bechi (1830 -1919). A young girl helps hold glasses on then face of the younger boy, likely her brother, to her right. They read from a book laid flat upon the table with a dark interior scene to the background. Signed faintly to the top right. Presented without glass, housed in a Baroque style gilt and gesso frame with lustrous gilding, acanthus moulding around the interior descent and to the corners. The exterior edges features an art deco style reticulated pattern with beveled frame liner.

Luigi Bechi was born in Florence, Italy in 1830. He studied at the Academy of Modern Art in Florence under Italian painters Giuseppe Bezzuoli (1784-1855) and Enrico Polastrini (1817-1876). In the early years of the 1860’s Bechi fought in several Italian wars for independence from Austria, and even spent time as a prisoner in Bezzecca. In years to follow, he found some success in his genre style that would continue throughout his years as a painter.
