An oil painting on Masonite of an abstract figural composition by listed American artist Donald Purdy (b. 1924). Portrayed with gestural brushstrokes and splotchy patches of pigment, this work features a half-body profile of a female figure emerging from an abyss of smeared vibrant colors. Abstract bird formations appear above her head. The painting is signed in black ink slightly to the right of the central lower edge. The composition is presented in a gray and silver-tone wood frame with a linen liner.
Donald Purdy earned his degrees from the University of Connecticut and Boston University. He is known for his Modern abstract style that combines impressionistic elements. His work has been exhibited by multiple art institutions including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the New Britain museum, and the Butler Institute of Arts, among others.
