Chinese Ming Dynasty Parcel-Gilt Bronze Figure on Teak Roundback Armchair

Item Details

A Chinese Ming dynasty (1368-1644) parcel-gilt bronze figure seated on a teak roundback armchair. The seated figure is dressed in robes and a wears a mian guan hat (冕冠). This style of headdress was reserved for official and state rituals and would have originally included strands of beads (旒 liu) draped from both ends. Emperors exclusively wore twelve strands of beads on their mian guan while members of the royal family were entitled to nine strands of nine beads. As there are nine holes present along the edge of the figure’s hat (with one filled in), the figure is likely a royal figure. The cast figure with traces of original gilding is seated upon a carved teak roundback armchair. Though several paper labels are affixed to the verso of the figure, the piece is otherwise unmarked. 1938.0272
