Chinese 19th Century Shiwan Ware Stoneware Figures

Item Details

A set of 19th Century Shiwan (石湾) stoneware figures presented in a carved wood and glass case. The stoneware figures depict two seated figures with glazed flowing robes and unglazed heads and arms. The robes are glazed in a mottled ‘eggplant purple’ (茄皮紫 jia pi zi) glaze with white trim.

Provenance
Collected in the late 19th and early 20th century and donated to a Private Midwestern Institution in 1938
Sold to enhance and preserve the Institution’s mission-relevant Collections

Condition

Pieces display broken fingers and walking stick; minor damage and markings to case
