Fine 19th Century Santos of San Jacinto, in a Neo-Gothic Case

A very fine 19th Century carved wooden Santos of San Jacinto de Polonia (1185-1257), Saint Hyacinth of Poland, Ordo Praedicatorum. The somewhat earlier case, neo-Gothic in form being cataloged as 18th century, with origins in Mexico city, was crafted with gold leafed plaster over wood framework and original glass panels. The case has a hinged panel door on the back side of the housing. The figure of Saint Hyacinth is crafted with a painted plaster over wood body and cloth Dominican robes. The Saint is adorn with a metal crown of thorns and wields the remains of a monstrance. Saint Hyacinth of Poland (1185 – 1257) was a Dominican friar who worked to establish monasteries and spread religion throughout Northern and Eastern Europe. He is the patron saint of Lithuania, those in danger of drowning, and Deer Park, Texas.

Condition

- significant damage to decorative elements near top of piece; minor markings and wear to finish. Consistent with age. Missing pieces to the monstrance in his hand.
